How Do Stepper Motors Work

  • Q Stepping Modes

A Stepper motors offer different stepping modes to control their movement. The two common modes are full step and microstepping. In full step mode, the motor moves one step at a time, aligning the rotor with each energized coil. Microstepping, on the other hand, allows for smoother motion by energizing the coils with varying currents, creating intermediate positions between full steps.
  • Q Working Principle of a Stepper Motor

    A
Stepper motors work on the principle of electromagnetism. The motor's rotor moves in response to the magnetic field generated by the stator's electromagnets. By energizing the coils in a specific sequence, the magnetic field interacts with the permanent magnet or soft iron rotor, causing it to align with the energized electromagnet. This alignment creates a step or increment of motion. By repeating this sequence, the motor can achieve precise rotation.
